Orkut Adds RSS Feeds Support

I've always wished for Orkut to include some sort of blog-like functionality so I could keep posting what's up out there, kinda like MySpace or any other social network, actually. Orkut did it and as expected, did it in a different way that's just so typical Google. You can now include RSS feeds (from other services) into your Orkut account, so anyone browsing your profile can be updated.

Orkut auto-discovers Picasa and Blogger accounts and gives you the option of adding them! I've added my Blogger, Picasa (kinda empty), Last.fm and my Twitter to my Orkut. Go ahead and add yours!

Update 9.7.07: Nandini Kappiah just posted to the orkut blog about the RSS feeds that I wrote about two months ago! orkut Blog: orkut Feeds your Needs.

Lay's: India's Mint Mischief

I love Lay's and maybe no one can eat just one, but me, well, I can't eat just one packet. I never buy the smaller Rs. 5 or Rs. 10 packs because their existence doesn't make any sense to me. Anyway, the latest flavor out here in India is Mint Mischief which is actually nothing but the exact same flavor as the Golgappa (pani-puri) style Lay's which was somewhat short lived. If you liked Lay's Golgappa, then pick up Mint Mischief. I'll still put Australian Cilantro Surprise on the top of my list of favorite Lay's. I miss that flavor.

Gui Boratto - Beautiful Life

Even though I'm not entirely tuned in to the whole minimal/techno buzz, I've heard a few good tracks by Gui Boratto, so I decided to give Chromophobia a try. The journey across the first ten tracks evoked a minimal reaction from me, but I was instantly elated the moment i heard Beautiful Life, sung by his wife Luciana Villanova. This is eight minutes and a half of pure electronic bliss. It's the new-age Halcyon+On+On by Orbital. If your life isn't really all that beautiful, this song will make it so! As RA aptly put it, the "life-affirming" Beautiful Life IS the best track in the entire album.

Looking for lyrics to it? Here you go!

What a beautiful life, what a beautiful world
What a beautiful life, what a beautiful world
What a beautiful life, what a beautiful life, what a beautiful world
What a beautiful life, what a beautiful life, what a beautiful world

I can see light, I can see love, I can see the sun
I can see light, I can see love, I can see the sun

What a beautiful life, what a beautiful life, what a beautiful world
What a beautiful life, what a beautiful life, what a beautiful world

I can see light, I can see love, I can see the sun
I can see light, I can see love, I can see the sun

What a beautiful life, what a beautiful life, what a beautiful world
What a beautiful life, what a beautiful life, what a beautiful world
What a beautiful life, what a beautiful life, what a beautiful world
What a beautiful life, what a beautiful life, what a beautiful world

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video must be worth an entire book! Try this:

Chromophobia is worth buying simply for this one single track! Buy Gui Boratto - Chromophobia from Amazon

Mashtronic @ Ministry of Sound, New Delhi 05.25.07 - Reviews and Pics

Well, I missed this gig because it was in another city, but I have these photos taken by Prachi from the forums on Submerge.in. She's got something to say about the gig too, so head over to the thread and hear out.

Created with Paul's flickrSLiDR.

Can someone please get me that GU CD !!!

Matt Darey - Nocturnal 094 Incl. Mauro Picotto Guest Mix

Mauro Picotto!!? I haven't heard of this guy since Komodo which was almost a decade ago! His Discogs page reveals that he hasn't been too busy over the last few years, so it'll be either very interesting to see what he'll be upto this weekend, or downright boring. I swear, if he plays Komodo on his Nocturnal 094 guest mix, I won't make the cue sheet for his set.

Update 5.24.07: I forgot that I'm not in town this weekend. Shit.

Update 5.25.07:
I'm not going anywhere this weekend! Whee!

Update 5.27.07: Man, that guest mix set was weird. I couldn't ID a single track. The second last track really freaked me out. I think I'll sleep with the lights on.

Update 5.27.07: Anyway, I've put up the cue sheet for Mauro Picotto's set. I'll work on Matt Darey's hour later. As usual, both cue sheets are optimised for Last.fm scrobbling, will be TMB-compatible and can be joined using QeD to work with the PS releases.

Update 5.28.07: Full track list is up, thanks to TranceAddict forums. Will update the cues in a few hours!

Update 5.29.07: The PS cue sheet timings for the guest mix look entirely different from my timings for the guest mix. Even the track list has an extra track (apart from the intro). I'll go thru the cue again and see if I missed a track.

GU Mashtronic @ Ministry of Sound, New Delhi 05.25.07

Anyone who's known me for long enough knows how sacred Global Underground is to me and the thought of a GU gig going down in our country has been something I've been praying for for the life of the label - a decade. Some people think that GU has become very commercial and I do agree that some of their recent releases have not been very groundbreaking additions to the series, but I still religiously follow Global Underground as it has almost single-handedly influenced my taste and interest in this genre of music. So you can imagine how fucking pissed off I am to learn that the first GU party, with Mashtronic, to take place in my country will be in New Delhi at Ministry of Sound this Friday the 25th of May, 2007 and I won't be able to attend it because I've had a vacation planned this weekend much before the gig was announced. This won't end up as a new GU033: Mashtronic: New Delhi, but I still hate the fact that I'll miss it.

I hate you guys. Seriously.

You'd better open up a Ministry of Sound club in Mumbai REALLY fast.

Nick Warren @ Poison, Mumbai 05.23.07 - Review

I'll post the full review up here when I'm a little more sober. Till then, here's a very sparse track listing of whatever he played tonight:

  • Pole Folder - Buenos Aires / Bokoto 10PM (from GU030 CD2)
  • 16 Bit Lolitas - Non Verbal Language (from GU030 CD2)
  • Paolo Mojo - 1983 (Eric Prydz Remix) - This was overlaid with the "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Djuma Soundsystem - Les Djinns (Trentemoller Mix) - Very oddly dropped without any lead-up to it.
  • Donna Summer - I Feel Love (some unknown remix) - This is old and it felt really old.
  • Some Underworld track - not too sure. My friend says it has very Ulrich Schnauss-like basslines, but I don't know. Nah, he says he was wrong.
  • The final track was some mix of a song by The Killers. I don't listen to much of that, so I don't know but it was probably "Mr. Brightside" or whatever.
I'll add a couple of more words here tomorrow. Good night!

Btw, here's the picture I took before the bouncers laser-tagged me. They weren't allowing anyone to take any pictures, but a lot of people still got quite a few shots anyway.

Nick Warren @ Poison, Mumbai 05.23.07 - More Details

Nick Warren plays at Poison tonight and here are a few more details for those who don't have this info already.

The tickets will cost Rs. 1,000 for a couple for those who aren't on the list. There is no cover charge as far as I know, which was one of the good things about the Talvin Singh gig (Rs. 1,200 with a cover charge of Rs. 1,000).

I know it's a little late to post this, but if you haven't had a chance to listen to any Nick Warren stuff, try these for starters:

  • GU030: Nick Warren: Paris
  • GU028: Nick Warren: Shanghai
  • GU024: Nick Warren: Reykjavik
  • GU018: Nick Warren: Amsterdam
  • GU018: Nick Warren: Brazil
  • GU003: Nick Warren: Prague
He's probably the only guy with as many titles from Global Underground to his credit. Nick Warren is also the fourth DJ featured in the Global Underground series to come to perform in India, after Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold.

That's about it for now. Check back later for a full review and... I think I'll get some pictures this time! Cya!

Firefox Tip: Multi-line Bookmark Toolbar

With high monitor resolutions like 1440x900, 1680x1050 etc. being common today, there's no need to try and save screen space by letting the extremely convenient Firefox bookmark toolbar collapse items that go beyond the width of the screen. With this Firefox hack, you can make your bookmark toolbar expand in height, so all items will always be visible to you.

There are a few hacks floating around, but this is the one that seems to work the best. Look for a file called userChrome.css or userChrome-example.css (if you haven't customised Firefox yet) and paste this bit of CSS into it at the end. Remember to remove the "-example" part of the filename when you save it.

/* Multi-row bookmarks toolbar */
#bookmarks-ptf {
display:block !important;
}
#PersonalToolbar:not([collapsed]) #bookmarks-ptf > toolbarbutton {
visibility: visible !important;
}
#bookmarks-stack {
overflow: visible !important;
}
#bookmarks-stack > .bookmarks-toolbar-overflow-items {
display: none !important;
}
Close all Firefox windows and start it again. This gives you something like this:

I'm sure you'll find it immensely more productive to not use those >> icons to view the collapsed items.

Thanks to Swami on the MozillaZine forums for this.

Matt Darey - Nocturnal 093 Incl. Ferry Corsten Guest Mix

This is a killer trance night! Matt Darey and Ferry Corsten teaming up on Nocturnal 093 and you can bet your ass this is going to shake things up! Stay tuned to this page.. I'm still tuned into the show :)

Update 5.20.2007: Review: Matt Darey's hour was a little too electro for my tastes, but tracks like Zdarlight and Bodydance were really up to the mark. And there *IS* something likeable about Feel the Hard Rock...heh. Ferry Corsten's set was something you'd normally expect from him, but the only track that really stood out for me is the rework of the classic Glassgarden by Sonorous - jump to 7:24 for that one!

Update 5.20.2007: Cue sheets and tracklisting are now online.

Haywards Black: Strong Stout Beer

I don't normally fancy a Haywards 2000 or a Haywads 5000 (although I must say that I've enjoyed one everytime I've tried), but the whole packaging of Haywards Black Strong Stout Beer is so good looking, I just had to go have it. I feared it might taste like Guinness, which is really bitter, but that wasn't going to stop me from trying it.

As I've proclaimed on numerous occasions, I'll try any beer at least once in my life. That was also one of the agendas I had while visiting Berlin last year for the IFA - to try out each and every beer I could get my hands on. I got a chance to have Berliner Kindl (kinda like our Kingfisher), Warsteiner (nice), BitBurger (bitter!), Tsing Tsao (yucky Chinese stuff) and a few others that I can't remember right now cuz I'm quite buzzed.

Anyway, back to Haywards Black. The beer does taste a bit dark and strong and it is, but it's nowhere as bitter as Guinness is. It's really dark, so it looks like concentrated ice tea when you pour it in a glass. I like this one! Its taste is comparable to Haywards 5000, I guess, but if not that, then I can say that it's really strong. I'm quite high tight now. Maybe two pints later you won't enjoy it as much as the first sip, but I can definitely have more of this than Fosters. Way more.

I'd put pictures here, but I think I'll do that in the morning.

*hic*

I wonder who's the guest on tomorrow night's Nocturnal 093 with Matt Darey...

Samsung Ultra Edition 10.9 SGH-U600 Unboxing!

The phone I had been waiting for for... just around 4 months actually... is finally here and I bought it! I was trying to write 10.9 reasons why I was waiting for this phone, but before I could find those many reasons, the phone has become mine!

I'll still try and list out a few reasons...

  1. Ultra slim - only 10.9mm!
  2. Very stylish slider!
  3. Large 2.22-inch QVGA (240x320) screen
  4. EDGE for faster web browsing
  5. NetFront Browser 3.2 for full HTML/JavaScript web browsing!
  6. Smart Search - like AvaFind for your mobile phone!
  7. Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP!
  8. 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus and a bright LED flash!
  9. 66mb free phone memory + microSD memory card slot!
  10. Included USB cable with Mass Storage / Sync mode and USB recharging!
  11. Improved music player with sorting by artist, album and rating support, album art support and the ability to sync with Windows Media Player via MTP. Not that I'll ever use WMP, but it's good to know that it can be :)
All this for just Rs. 14,500. How about that, huh? The Sony Ericsson W880i can go kiss my behind!

Now sit back and enjoy a slideshow of the entire unboxing process!

Note: You might need to turn the captions on by clicking the little 'conversation bubble' icon on the lower right of the slideshow window.

The slideshow is neat, isn't it? I think I should do the same to the static list of pictures I had put up when I bought my Samsung SGH-E250. And while I'm at it, I'll also put up regular images in this post for the old-fashioned amongst you.

Free RapidShare Premium Account for 1 year?

I don't usually fall for this kind of goop, but this particular one is really hard to say no to. Kind technology blogger Raymond of the popular Raymond.cc blog has put up a scheme that will get you a free RapidShare Premium account for one whole year if you simply subscribe to receive updates from the website via email, taking the total number of subscribed users beyond 5000. There's no money to be paid, no other newsletters to subscribe to, no banners to click... nothing. Just sign up for the news letter and you're good to go. What's strange is that Raymond is even offering an equal-value alternative for those who don't want or need a RapidShare premium account - he'll buy anything you want worth €54.99 and ship it to your address. Anything.

Either he's the kindest and the most generous technology blogger out there, or it's too damn early in the morning for me to be reading blogs. I think I'll go brush my teeth now.

GU032: Adam Freeland: Mexico City

There are still a few more days to go before GU032 hits the stores, but Adam has been kind enough to share a 24-minute teaser of his Mexico City mix to all us fans who just can't wait.

It's obviously too early for me to pen down something conclusive about the set, but I think this is a new turning point in the Global Underground series; similar to the time of the release of Deep Dish's GU021: Moscow mix, which took the series in a more progressive direction. Yes, I'd prefer that sound, but I'm also all thumbs up for evolution of music, which is what we can expect with GU032. With Mexico City, GU is going to make a lot of new fans, but it will also lose a lot of old fans who are used to GUs 021 through 031. Which one of the two will I be?

Anyway, don't take my word for it. Go ahead and download it. And let me know what you think!

Nick Warren @ Poison, Mumbai 05.23.07

Aaaaah! What can I say? 23rd May is a big red 'X' on my calendar!

The last time someone big was scheduled to play at Poison, his luggage got lost at the Amsterdam airport, indefinitely postponing the Matthew Dekay gig. Nick, please give strict instructions to the flight crew regarding your luggage!

Check out the flyer right here!

Matt Darey - Nocturnal 092 Incl. Mark Sherry Guest Mix

I missed last night's Nocturnal 092 because I was at Paul Oakenfold's, but that's okay, because I'm downloading it as I type these words. Only a few more minutes to finish the download. Matt Darey and Mark Sherry. I'm not too into the harder stuff, but since it's a Nocturnal mix, it should be interesting!

Patience! :)

Update 5.14.2007: Hour 1 cue is now online. Also, I'm not going to use RapidShare, DJUploads or any other file sharing site for the cues, because lindmik's cue site is a better solution now that I have an account there. Hour 2 coming up soon.

Update 5.15.2007: Hour 2 cue is now online, too. I'll try being a little quicker the next time :)

Matt Darey - Nocturnal Podcast 001

He's been talking about it for a while now and it's finally here - the first Nocturnal Podcast 001 by Matt Darey. There's no track listing out yet, but I'll go ahead and make the cue sheet anyway. That is, after I come back from seeing Paul Oakenfold live.

Meanwhile, here's a direct link to the Nocturnal Podcast 001. No RapidShare, no MegaUpload, no sh*t! Download away!

Download: Matt Darey - Nocturnal Podcast 001.mp3 (79.66mb)
Download: Matt Darey - Nocturnal Podcast 001 Cue Sheet (DJUploads.com)

Track listing:

  1. Dyad 10 - Sugar (Sweet Thing) (Tocadisco Remix)
  2. Wippenberg featuring Tiff Lacey - Promisedland (Sphaera Remix)
  3. Matt Darey featuring Tiff Lacey - Sum of All Fears (Tenishia Remix)
  4. Abdul Bayyari featuring Josh Money - 400 Years Till Dawn
  5. Suite 117 - Smaller (Dave Aude Remix)
  6. Cerf, Mistika and Jaren - Light the Skies (Retrobyte Light the Sidechain Mix)
  7. Noel Sanger - Nothing
  8. Danny Armstrong - Off the Wall
  9. DJ Style - So Bad (Dom Kane Remix)
  10. Tronso and Stian Klo - Sodium Lamp (DJ Sun and Virus Remix)
  11. Phatzoo - Big Bash
  12. Marco V. - Universal Enemy
  13. Sander Van Doorn - Back By Any Demand
  14. DJ Sveshnikov - Sochi 2014
  15. Coburn - Razorblade (Play Paul Vocal Club Mix)
When Matt calls out the artist for track 10, it sounds like "Tronso Earning Fish" instead of "Tronso and Stian Klo". Anyone know why? It's Tronso and Inkfish, but all over the place more people have mentioned Tronso and Stian Klo, so I'll stick with that.

Update: Track listing is now online!

Update 5.13.07: Cue sheet is up. I used Pioneer CDJ-1000s (MKIIIs, if you must know) to get the splits, so the cue's should be a lot more accurate than before! Have fun!

Paul Oakenfold @ City Studio, Mumbai 05.12.07

After last night's "strictly OK" Talvin Singh gig, I almost decided to skip Paul Oakenfold completely. Because, this is what you can expect from tonight's gig:

  • Inadequate cooling
  • Too many people
  • ... half of who don't even know who Oakenfold is or what kind of music he plays
  • Rattling roof
  • At least two or three remixes of Southern Sun
But due to peer pressure and courtesy of invites, I figured... what the hell. So I'll see you ladies and gentlemen at City Studio tonight.

Yawn.

Update 5.13.0: Review?

The guy who was opening for Paul - DJ Dale, if I'm not mistaken - was playing a throbbing progressive set that a lot of people were really enjoying. The sound was okay, but the ratting roof was making it sound like the amps were way over the red. There weren't too many people, but we expected that to change later on.

Then came Paulie with an average set of tracks that included a little too many classics (though updated) like Rui Da Silva featuring Cassandra Touch Me, Solar Stone's epic Seven Cities (that track is bliss!), naturally Southern Sun (grr), a bit more danceable rework of Faster Kill Pussycat, intermixed with some popular recent stuff like Wippenberg's remix of Super 8 and DJ Tab's Needs to Feel amongst others. Interestingly, there were still not many people around. I had enough place to lie down comfortably in the Vitruvian Man position without touching anyone or anything. No, I didn't try that. Anyway, he brought the grind to a halt around Greece 2000. He played some psy too, with the most prominent track being Man With No Name's Sly-Ed, off his 1996 compilation album, A Voyage into Trance. I just can't remember if he played psy before Greece 2000 or after. Sorry about that, LOL.

After that, DJ Dale came back to the console again, but more than half the people in the "club" didn't notice the change. They kept wondering why the music is picking up when they expected the lights to come on. His dark progressive set kept the people moving till very, very late.

What's more intresting is that sometime in the middle, I bumped into Talvin Singh in the courtyard and had a nice half an hour chat with him. He's such a great guy! I told him about last night's pros and cons and (ahem!) my review of his performance (of course, without the "strictly OK" part, LOL). We spoke about music in general, what separates the commercial from the good stuff, and rhythm. He liked my name and told me how it's an important part of Indian classical music. Which I knew, but it was still amazing to hear it from him :) He said that an Aalaap is when "we wait and watch," meaning that it's the beginning of a piece when the tabla hasn't started yet. I spoke to him about his next studio album Sweet Box, which is due in October of 2007. I will be looking forward to meeting him in the UK this August. He asked me to check out the Glastonbuy festival while I'm there. That should be an interesting experience!

Next up - Nick Warren @ Poison, Mumbai 5.23.07... only ten more days to go!

Talvin Singh @ Red Light, Mumbai, 05.11.07

Biggie! Talvin Singh is playing at Red Light on 11th of May, which is conveniently a Friday. Following him, is Paul Oakenfold @ Kamala City on 12th of May, which is Saturday.

I'm definitely going for Talvin Singh. How often do you have someone as talented and of Indian origin come down and perform in your own city (Pun?)? I'll probably go for Oakey, but I won't hang around for long - I'll surely escape the monotonousness of hearing "Southern Sun" yet again. I hate that track. And Paul plays it in each and every single set as if it's the greatest trance track ever to have graced the vinyls. So wrong he is.

But all this means I have to miss this weekend's Nocturnal 092 with Matt Darey. This will be the first Nocturnal episode that I won't be tuning into, at least partially, since Nocturnal 083 with Matt Darey and Perry O'Neil, which was also incidentally by first Nocturnal show. I don't know what I would have done if it wasn't for the Nocturnal media player, or TMB releases of the show just a few hours after it goes on air.

TMB, I'm counting on you this weekend.

Update 5.11.07: This just in. Submerge forum members pay only 600 bucks (500 cover) before 11pm and after that everyone pays 1,200 bucks, but you still have 1,000 worth of cover so it's really not that bad a deal. Stay hungry, stay thirsty! See you all @ Red Light!

Update 5.12.07: My Review!

I thought Talvin's set was a little slapdash. Some very groovable tunes in the middle, some of his own tracks (OK and Dubla), some excellent "karaoke" style voiceovers, but a lot of very queer stuff that the people couldn't identify with. Eventually he seemed to transgress towards "conventional" tech/electro type mish-mash stuff with a familar 4/4 beat, which is so totally not him. But that's what was making the crowd shuffle their feet, so... The one track I remember really shook up the people was this one that sounded very similar to Smack My Bitch Up.. does anyone know what that was? I left right after Pearl came to the console and Nikhil asked us all to remain quiet...

I think it would be apt to say that Talvin Singh's set was ... OK!

:P

I need some rest.. see you guys at the Oakenfold gig tonight!

Matt Darey - Nocturnal 091 Incl. Fedde Le Grand Guest Mix

Nocturnal 091 with Matt Darey and a guest mix from Fedde Le Grand is still going in the background as I write this, but I made this post so you guys know that I intend to make the cue for these sessions as well, so check back in a day.

Keep listening and keep visiting :)

Update: As promised, here is the cue sheet for Matt Darey's first hour on Nocturnal 091. As usual, this syncs to the online version on the Nocturnal media player. Cue for the Fedde Le Grand guest mix is coming up in just a while.

Update: Cue for the Fedde Le Grand mix is also up. The phone call in the beginning of the set lasts for a little too long, so I had to make it into a 3-minute intro track. Enjoy! Also, I erroneously named the Matt Darey cue file to "090", so I fixed that and uploaded a new one. The file contents are the same, so if you downloaded it before, just change the 0 to 1!

Update (6.30.2007): Track 7 from the Fedde mix is Tarkan - Start the Fire (Mousse T Abi's Club Mix)! The original track is so lame, but this mix is fucking hot!

Matt Darey - Nocturnal 090 Incl. Solarstone Guest Mix

I got tired of waiting for lindmik to make a cue for last weekend's Matt Darey's Nocturnal 090 radio show, so I just made my own. It's not perfect, but hey, it's better than a 60 minute MP3 file. This cue syncs to the online version on the Nocturnal Media Player.

Note that this is just the first hour with Matt Darey's mix, without the cue for Solarstone's guest mix. I might make one for the second hour too, but I'm not sure. I made the cue for Solarstone's guest mix too! Also, I might make this a regular habit, but I'm not sure of that either. I loved Solarstone's set, by the way, it was simply brilliant! I wish all the tracks were ID'd.
