Matt Darey - Nocturnal 099

The last Nocturnal show before it hits a century is a continuous two-hour mix by Matt Darey from his recent Australian tour. That's right - this time, there's no guest mix by another DJ. Nocturnal guest mixes have been really interesting, so I'm a bit disappointed that I won't get one this weekend, but two hours of Matt is good enough! :)

PHP RSS Dir a.k.a. RSS Index Of Script

PHP RSS Dir or RSS Index Of is a script that generates an RSS feed for files in the directory that it's running in. It's great for use by websites that often dump files into a folder and make them available for download, like Linux distros, Mozilla releases and other such sites. It gives a clean RSS 2.0 feed that it's users can subscribe to and be notified of very easily.

I came upon this idea because I browse more RSS feeds than actual websites these days, and I also have a number of online folder locations that I need to keep a watch on. However, this isn't a client side script, which means that you can't use it on your PC to watch a folder elsewhere. Remote folder support is planned in the next release, so you can run it off a local web server or your own site and have it deliver the file updates from another server.

Installation is very simple. Just keep it in a directory with files, for eg. "/downloads" and edit a couple of variables in the script for the actual URL of your website, the feed etc. There's also a variable that let's you restrict the feed to only certain types of files, such as movies or zip files.

The script is GPL, which means you can can modify it and use it in your apps, but you must include the source information.

Matt Darey - Nocturnal 098 Incl. Quivver Guest Mix

This is what I love about Nocturnal. Everytime there's a guest mix by an artist that I've heard or at least heard about before, but not an hour's worth, as in the second hour of each episode. This week, Matt presents a sequel to last week's "retrospecive" mix. I have no idea what the second hour will be like!

Christopher Lawrence @ Poison, Mumbai 06.27.2007

American trance DJ Christopher Lawrence was all set to make his debut appearance in the city on the 27th of June, according to his website. However, according to recent Submerge forum posts, this gig may have been cancelled.

Christopher Lawrence was voted #4 by DJ Magazine in 2006, but somehow I never enjoyed his sound, which came across to me as pretty conventional trance-like. I would have definitely looked forward to his performance here in Mumbai, but I guess that's not gonna happen.

DJ Rebekah @ Rock Bottom, Mumbai 06.20.2007

Models turning actors is out; Models turning DJs is in. This is the second, somewhat popular, Playmate-turned-DJ that we'll have the pleasure of seeing perform in Mumbai this year, the first being DJ Diamond.

She's performing at Rock Bottom, as a part of the "Foreplay" series which aims to bring down one international DJ every month. The theme for the night seems to be "orgasmic electro and filthy tech house." Babe, you had me at "orgasmic!"

As was the case with the DJ Diamond, I've never seen or heard anything about UK-based DJ Rebekah, but bit of looking around reveals that she's been fairly active in the dirty and techy house house scene and has performed all over the world, including Tokyo, China, Russia, Mexico, UAE apart from various clubs in the UK. After tonight, she can add India to the list too!

DJ Rebekah performs tonight, the 20th of June, 10.30pm onwards, at Rock Bottom in Juhu. Entry charges are Rs. 1,200 per couple (Rs. 700 entry + Rs. 500 cover charge).

I was beginning wondering if I'd ever get to know who this week's guest would be on Nocturnal 097 before the actual airtime on Saturday night! Here you go.. this week's exclusive guest mix comes from Radioslave. I haven't actually heard too much of Radioslave, other than a few essential mixes so I'm not sure what to expect. I guess we'll just have to wait and find out. So tune in to DI.fm this Saturday night or midnight on Sunday at 12.30

DJ Diamond @ Poison, Mumbai 6.13.07

Yeah, I couldn't remember her off the top of my head either. Even though it was mentioned that she was a Playmate. Apparently she's produced God is a DJ, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the Faithless hit from a few years ago. It'll be a regular commercial dance/trance night, but it should be an interesting night. I mean... just look at her! :)

Matt Darey - Nocturnal 096 Incl. Junkie XL Guest Mix

The word on the next Nocturnal guest mix by Junkie XL went out with last week's newsletter announcing the PQM Guest Mix (the tracklist for which was up on Aalaap.com a full five days before the official announcement! Hah!). There isn't much info on the Junkie XL guest mix so I all we can do is wait and hope for it to be good. Tune in to DI.fm's Trance channel this weekend on June 9th past midnight, which will actually be June 10th here in India.

Update 6.10.2007: As you can see from the track list, last night's Nocturnal 096 a very interesting throw away from the usual melodic and vocal trance with some classics like James Lavelle's U.N.K.L.E. Remix of F.E.A.R. and Dirty Vegas' Days Go By. It seemed like Junkie XL's mix had already started with Matt Darey's hour, with some JXL remixes appearing sooner. Both of them played the JXL remix of Infusion's Legacy at spot #2 of their respective sets. Is that the first time that has happened in the history of Nocturnal? As TMB and PS releases get uploaded, I'll post download links here too.

Blackle: Save Energy by Going Black!

Blackle is an interface that gives you a black version of Google. Why would you want that? To save power of course! Black pixels on your screen take up less power than white pixels, so if you use Google a lot (who doesn't?), you'll save some power by using Blackle. The savings may not be significant, but if a larger chunk of the population switches to a black Google, it would save "750 Megawatt-hours a Year". I'm not sure how much that is, but it sure sounds like a bloody hell lot. You can read more about Blackle here.

There's something you must know about Blackle first. It's not owned by or affiliated with Google in any way. It's merely a website offering Google results in a custom format. For those who came in late, Google runs an online advertisement program called AdSense which lets anyone put ads and search boxes on their site. The traffic generated through putting a Google search box on your site also earns you cash, so every time someone runs a Blackle instead of a Google, Google owes Blackle a few cents. Nice move.

Matt Darey - Nocturnal 095 Incl. PQM Guest Mix

This weekend looks excellent with Matt Darey's Nocturnal 095 featuring an excluuuuuuusive guest mix from PQM! Expect spaced out progressive, breaks and haunting vox. I'm going to be listening to a lot of PQM till Saturday night! You are sleeping... sleeping...

Don't know PQM? Listen to a mix of "You are Sleeping" from the Deep Dish's Global Underground 025. Try "The Flying Song". Also, give Balance 005 by James Holden a try. It's a trip through the stars and dust neatly packaged into two discs. It's my favorite Balance to date, followed by Luke Fair's Balance 011!

TMB releases are now a single, two-hour file, so I'll join these and make a separate one for that release.
